THIS IS THE STORY OF A GIRL
Hi, I’m Alanah. I really love farming, yes I do. I’ve been growing food in some capacity for about 8 years at farms around the country, including 5-ish years on Whidbey Island.
I love the community I’ve built here and am excited to be managing my own farming operation here thanks to my amazing friends and mentors on the island.
My mission is to grow nutritious, chemical-free food and flowers for my community and bring people closer to their food system. I grow food to feed my community. I grow flowers to bring people joy and add a little light to our lives.
My passion for growing food sparked when I interned at a nonprofit in Houston called Recipe for Success. I taught cooking, gardening, and nutrition classes for kids aged 3-18. I realized how much I loved being outside and having my hands in the soil and seeing these kids’ eyes light up as they learned about where their food comes from.
From there I joined AmeriCorps in Arkansas and ended up working at a farm outside Little Rock where I was introduced to growing food on a commercial scale. I’ve worked at Finca Tres Robles in Houston (a farm just east of downtown, so cool!) before eventually moving to Whidbey Island and working for Willowood Farm and Foxtail Farm.
Farming has taught me to take a lot of risks in life. I’ve learned to be very patient and trust in the process with some deep internal understanding that good things take time. I’ve learned to focus on building my farm slowly and with intention, knowing that I am going at my own pace and that is simply the best I can do.
I’m very grateful to be going into my third season with the farm. I am SO excited to be feeding my community, especially at a time when we all need it most. Thanks for being here!
